Retreat Itinerary and inclusions We’re offering you a very unique package, we want you to experience the true heart of the outback and so the package not only includes the workshop fees and tutorage, it also includes 6 nights accommodation, meals and smokos and some excursions. The below itinerary is a guide only and management reserves the right to substitute and change this itinerary where necessary.   Day of Arrival – Wednesday 13th May, 2023 Have the chance to freshen up (and maybe even a little exploring) after your journey. Visit the Blackall Aquatic Centre to relax in the naturally hot Artesian Spa or heated pool, before joining your hosts and your tutor for welcome drinks, followed by dinner, at the Living Arts Centre. Day One – Thursday 14th May, 2023 Introductions and Workshop Commencement at the Living Arts Centre. Enticing lunch and smokos will be provided to keep the brain active while you work. For our afternoon activity we will enjoy High Tea and a tour of The Lodge on Hawthorn, Blackall’s former Masonic Lodge. Dinner will be at the Barcoo Hotel. Lunch and smokos will be provided for on the day. Day Two – Friday 15th May, 2023 Workshop to continue at the Living Arts Centre during the day. For the nights activities we will go to The Bushman’s Artisans Gallery to have a fun night of team painting and a delicious dinner. Day Three – Saturday 16th May, 2023 Friday morning will see us plein air painting at a location of Chan’s choice. Late in the afternoon we will enjoy the sunset at the Roly Poly, a local sculpture. A myriad of colour fills this expansive, open, inspirational, sunburnt country along with a chance to capture memories of your adventure. Dinner will be at one of the local eating spots. Day Four – Sunday 17th May, 2023 Workshop to continue at the Living Arts Centre during the day. Visit to the historic Blackall Woolscour in the afternoon – perfect for experimenting with light and lines with sketching or plein air painting. Smokos and lunch will be provided and dinner to be at a local venue. Day Five – Monday 18th May, 2023 Final day finishing works, showcasing and critiquing. Farewell drinks and dinner at the Living Arts Centre.

We will specifically concentrate on how to inject and capture the mood of the subject. The truly magical qualities of watercolour can best be demonstrated in portraying atmospheric effects. We will paint a variety of subjects, producing two paintings a day from start to finish; each painting will be chosen to demonstrate a certain technique and key learning points. There will be lots of useful discussions as well as tips on how to avoid potential pitfalls. If you enjoy the challenge of producing loose and bold watercolours, then this is for you. Chan will be covering: Properties of Colour & Colour Relationships Understanding Light and Shadows Wash and Glazing techniques Secrets of Wet-into-Wet Technique Understanding Timing in Watercolour to create magical effects Tonal Values Planning & Composition At the end of this course, you should: Become familiar with the medium and watercolour techniques Be able to plan an approach and method to complete a painting Learn how to paint different subjects Create fresh and lively paintings Complete a series of paintings

About the Workshop

The truly magical qualities of watercolour can best be demonstrated in portraying atmospheric effects, using the wet-in-wet technique. We will paint a variety of subjects, exploring the beautiful Daku Resort and the surrounding areas of the Island in Fiji.

Completing a full painting each day from start to finish; each painting will be chosen to demonstrate a certain technique and key learning points. There will be lots of useful discussions as well as tips on how to avoid potential pitfalls. Chan is well known for his generosity in sharing his insights and experiences in watercolour. His innovative approaches to teaching include models, slides, computer animations to explain the theory, then applying the theory in plein-air painting. Each student will receive personal attention and encouragement. If you enjoy the challenge of producing loose and bold watercolours, then this is for you.
